Alexander "Sandy" Thomas has been re-appointed as Reed Smith's global managing partner, following a challenge to his leadership from John Martini.

Thomas (pictured), who first joined the firm in 1999 and is based in the firm's Washington DC office, will begin his three year term on 1 August 2014.

The vote, which concluded yesterday (10 June), began last month when Legal Week revealed Martini, the firm's business and finance vice-chair, had announced his intention to stand against Thomas.

The prospect of a contested election surprised some at the 1,800-lawyer firm, coming less than a year after a major change in leadership.

Previous global managing partner Gregory Jordan had personally backed Thomas as his successor, after he departed Reed Smith to take up the post of general counsel at PNC bank last October, during his fifth term in the role.

Martini, a Philadelphia-based employment partner, has held a number of senior management positions at Reed Smith, including chair of the firm's global executive compensation and employee benefits practice. Until 2012, he also headed the firm's tax, benefits and wealth planning group.

His intention to stand against Thomas was the catalyst for the first contested managing partner election at Reed Smith since 2009, when another Philadelphia employment partner – John DiNome – ran against Jordan.

The last election at Reed Smith was in 2012, when Jordan stood unopposed.
