King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) and Minter Ellison have each made up eight new lawyers in Australia as part of their annual promotion rounds as Australia's economy has begun to pick up.

The two firms, which alongside Allens, Clayton Utz, Ashurst Australia and Herbert Smith Freehills are among the country's 'big six' legal outfits, have both promoted more lawyers this year compared with 2013, when KWM announced seven new partners and Minter Ellison announced four.

The news also comes just a month after KWM said it had ended its pay freeze in Australia – partners having seen a more robust domestic market.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australia's GDP grew 1.1% in the first three months of 2014, bringing the country's annual growth rate to 3.5% between March 2013 and 2014.

KWM's promotions have been limited to M&A and dispute resolution lawyers and in major Australian cities, with four made up in Sydney, two in Canberra, one in Brisbane and one in Melbourne.

The firm, which last year merged with UK outift SJ Berwin, has still made up fewer lawyers in Australia than China and Europe, where it promoted 10 and 9 in April and May this year respectively.

Conversely Minter Ellison, which is one of two big six firms still independent, promoted lawyers across a broad mix of practices such as human resources, real estate, corporate, construction and disputes, and in a number of Australian cities, with two in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, one in Canberra and one in Perth.

In a statement recently appointed chief executive partner Tony Harrington – a former KWM advisor – also referenced five special counsel and twenty-five senior associates as among this year's senior appointments, reflective of the firm's "strong commitment" to the market.
