The Law Society has named former chief executive of the NHS Litigation Authority Catherine Dixon as its new chief executive.

Dixon (pictured) is set to replace the incumbent Desmond Hudson, who retires at the end of August having held the position since 2006.

She has experience in both public and private practice, beginning her legal career at Eversheds.

"I am committed to ensuring that the Law Society has a strong voice for all our members," said Dixon.

"I want to help the organisation represent, promote and support the profession across the spectrum of practice, speaking up for them and creating an environment in which the entire profession can flourish."

Previous to her work with the NHS, Dixon was general counsel and company secretary for the NSPCC. She has also worked in Vancouver as director of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.

"I am delighted that we have someone with Catherine's track record in the profession to help take the organisation forward," said Law Society president Andrew Caplan.

"I would like to thank Des for his tireless commitment to the organisation and the profession for the last eight years."

Earlier this year Hudson, the society's outgoing president, called for a criminal probe into the actions of pay day loans company, Wonga – after the company was fined £2.6m by the Financial Conduct Authority.
