Kirkland & Ellis has added 82 of its lawyers to partner in its annual promotion round, including eight associates in London.
The promotions, which are effective 1 October 2014, see junior lawyers making the cut in each of the firm's offices, apart from Houston, which opened earlier this year with the marquee hire of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett M&A partner Andrew Calder.
In London, Andrew Hagan, Mateja Maher, Matthew Merkle and Jonathan Tadd join the corporate team, while Emma Flett, Mark Knight and Oliver Currall join the intellectual property, restructuring and tax practices respectively, and Bryan Robson joins the debt finance team as a partner.
Across all of its offices, the 82 promotions effectively increase Kirkland's partnership by 12%. Like last year, Chicago again saw the greatest number of promotions, with 25.
Kirkland operates two classes of partner – share (equity) and non-share (salaried) – allowing it to promote a greater proportion of junior lawyers into its partnership than firms of a comparable size.
Lawyers brought into the non-share partnership are typically given four or five years to make share, or find a new home.
The model gives the firm flexibility when it comes to pay packages for major laterals, and, on average, awards share partners more than seven times the pay of its non-share partners.
This group – comprising more than half the partnership – is charged out at higher rates than senior associates at other firms, and contributes to a huge portion of Kirkland's profitability.
Last year, the firm promoted 80 lawyers to partnership.
