Parabis Group claimant arm Cogent Law is set to make 24 fee earners redundant at its Croydon office in a phased programme spanning five months.

The cuts follow Parabis' alternative business structure (ABS) ventures with Direct Line Group in March and with insurer Saga in January, leading to the transfer of more than three-quarters of Cogent Law's claimant work to the ABSs.

The move means that Cogent Law will no longer offer pre-litigation work from its Croydon base.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "Over the past year more than 75% of Cogent Law's claimant activities have transferred to two insurer-led ABSs in which Parabis is a partner. The remaining run-off work has been handled from two locations."

She added that since the work is coming to a "natural end", alongside an "absence of new work being generated", the firm has instead decided to focus on channelling its claimant work through its Leeds office.

She said: "As a result [of this] there will be a phased programme of redundancies over the next five months affecting 24 fee earners in Cogent's Croydon office."

Ten of those being made redundant have already left the firm.

The move follows the firm's decision to close its Bristol and Colchester outposts earlier this month, with individual consultations taking place on 23 jobs in Bristol and 18 in Colchester.

Of those placed at risk of redundancy, 32 are fee-earners, 18 of which are in Bristol and 14 in Colchester.

Parabis has begun the consolidation of its three London offices into a single City location, with the goal of finding a site before the end of next year. It is part of a wider move by the firm to channel its offering through fewer and larger sites.

The firm is also considering the launch of an additional base in South Africa, which would sit alongside an existing operation in Pretoria.

Parabis' other offices are located in Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Southampton, Milton Keynes, Evesham, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
