Latham & Watkins has poached a six-partner team from O'Melveny & Myers, including the head of the firm's entertainment, sports and media group Joseph Calabrese and prominent London-based partner Libby Savill.

Calabrese and fellow dealmaker Christopher Brearton are joining alongside partners Robert Haymer, Nancy Bruington and Kenneth Deutsch.

O'Melveny quickly moved to replace Calabrese, one of the top entertainment lawyers in the US, with three Century City partners Stephen Scharf, Matthew Erramouspe, and Bruce Tobey as transactional co-heads of the practice.

Savill (pictured) joined O'Melveny from Olswang just two years ago, to launch the US firm's UK media practice.

She advises major studios and independent producers and distributors on the production, financing, and distribution of motion pictures, and separately serves as the Deputy Chair of the British Film Institute.

While at Olswang, where she was head of the firm's film and television industry sector, Savill was involved in major British films including The Full Monty, An Education, and all of the James Bond films since Goldeneye. She also structured the financing deal for Best Picture Oscar-winner The King's Speech, receiving a co-executive producer credit for her work.

Latham declined to comment on the hire of the team, which has industry clients such as MGM, the International Olympic Committee, Warner Bros, as well as private equity funds such as Soros Fund Management and Elliott Management.

O'Melveny sought to downplay the team move, and last night (11 November) released a statement talking up the practice's strengths.
"Our clients could not be in better hands than with these three sought-out entertainment lawyers," said chair Bradley Butwin.

"Stephen, Matthew, and Bruce, together with our leading entertainment litigators, are furthering a legacy laid down by John O'Melveny, Deane Johnson, Donald Petroni, and others. Today, entertainment companies are facing an expanding global market and a changing digital media landscape, and O'Melveny's award-winning entertainment lawyers are poised to help them achieve their goals."
