GE's Africa legal team has grown from one lawyer in 2010 to 15 lawyers today.
Historically, GE's Africa transactions were handled by lawyers in the US, Europe or Dubai. Headquartered in Nairobi since 2011, GE Africa has grown to generate more than $3bn (£1.9bn) in revenues in 2013, with an annual growth rate in excess of 20%.

Bruce Campbell, a Zimbabwean who joined GE in the UK 12 years ago, heads the legal team as Africa general counsel.

Over the last 18 months he has shaped the team around four hubs (East, West, Southern and Lusophone) and is now set to expand in Port Harcourt (Nigeria), Maputo (Mozambique) and Accra (Ghana). The new recruits, all African nationals, will join from African multinationals and top-tier law firms.

Campbell's team handles the vast majority of work – bar M&A, regulatory and litigation – itself, working on large equipment and services contracts alongside seasoned colleagues based abroad. GE believes this has not only allowed the African team to acquire valuable skills but also brings an African voice to the negotiating table and helps to navigate specific local regulatory, cultural or language issues.
