Dechert partner Daniel Gal is to join Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom's international arbitration practice in London, in a rare hire for the New York firm, Legal Week has learned.

Gal, who heads Dechert's arbitration practice in the City, joined the firm in 2008 after a short stint as a partner at Dewey & Leboeuf, having previously worked at Debevoise & Plimpton.

He becomes the sixth partner in Skadden's international arbitration and litigation group in London, led by practice co-heads Karyl Nairn QC and David Kavanagh. He is also the first partner hire for Skadden's London office since 2012, when the US firm recruited Weil Gotshal & Manges restructuring guru Dominic McCahill.

Gal's practice focuses on emerging markets and the Middle East in particular, having recently represented a Saudi Arabian development company and a large Bahraini financial institution in a closed billion dollar dispute in London.

At Dechert, where he has also spent time in the firm's Dubai office, Gal acted on matters across a range of industries, including mining, energy, construction, banking and finance and technology.

Before joining the firm, he advised the controllers of Brasil Telecom during its two-year, $1.5bn (£762m) dispute with Telecom Italia before the ICC for the control of the Brazilian telecommunications.

His previous experience advising on Russian matters compliments Skadden's London disputes practice, which has acted on many of the major arbitrations involving Russian parties in recent years.

Most recently, Kavanagh advised United Capital Partners Group on parallel arbitration and litigation proceedings relating to its interests in Russian social networking site VKontakte, which settled in September following the $1.47bn (£1bn) sale of a stake in the company to Mail.Ru.
