Winning the Energy and Natural Resources Team of the Year award, Bracewell & Giuliani took a key role on a project supplying low-cost onshore wind power to the Kenyan national grid.

Accounting for approximately 20% of the county's current electricity generating capacity, at KES70bn (£0.5bn) the project is the largest single private investment in Kenya's history.

Bracewell advised on the supply and installation of the 365 wind turbines at the site, as well as their maintenance. Given the remoteness of the location, the contracts drawn up had to reflect the difficulties associated with this task. Potential problems included general transport risks (such as piracy risk, lack of existing road infrastructure and risk of damage to existing roads due to heavy use and the Kenyan rainy season), lack of water, lack of power and other utilities necessary for large-scale construction projects and risk to site personnel's security.

Over the course of the six-year project the same core legal team remained, despite team members moving between firms, because Bracewell worked in conjunction with those firms to retain consistency for the client.
