Reed Smith has boosted its City partner count by seven in its latest promotions round, with almost one third of the firm's 24 new partners made up in London.

The London office is the firm's only European base to see any partner promotions this year. Of the seven new partners, three are in the financial industry group – Ian Balkwill, James Fisher and Nicholas Williams – with the rest split across commercial disputes, private equity, energy and natural resources and real estate.

Fourteen of the other promotions were made in the US, spread across eight offices, while Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong and Shanghai saw one promotion apiece.

The firm has also promoted 19 lawyers to the rank of counsel, including two in London, with the promotions taking effect as of 1 January.

In last year's promotion round, Reed Smith made up three City lawyers in a slightly larger set of 26 promotions.

Elsewhere, two of five partners promoted by Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft this year are based in London.

The two made up in the City are Paul Dunbar, a corporate lawyer who advises private equity funds and corporate clients on M&A transactions, and Karen McMaster, a member of the firm's financial restructuring practice who focuses on debt restructuring and reorganisations. Of the other three partners made up, two were in New York with the other in Charlotte.
