Cooley has launched its long-awaited London office, marking the US firm's first foray into Europe.
The 20-partner office will be led by Morrison & Foerster (MoFo) London corporate head Justin Stock. Stock has been followed to Cooley by fellow MoFo partners Ann Bevitt, David Bresnick, Chris Coulter and Ed Lukins.
Ryan Naftulin, partner-in-charge of Cooley's Washington DC office, is relocating to the new City base to act as US liaison for London.
Meanwhile, the 14 other partners have joined from Edwards Wildman Palmer, which this weekend (10 January) completed its merger with Locke Lord to form Locke Lord Edwards. The moves mean that just two remaining Edwards Wildman partners will become part of the newly merged firm.
Notable hires for Cooley among the Edwards Wildman partners include Laurence Harris, who became the firm's deputy managing partner in 2012 after serving as London office head, as well as Becket McGrath, who joined from Berwin Leighton Paisner in 2009 to launch a European competition practice.
The new Cooley base, which is expected to house 55 lawyers in total, is launching with capabilities in corporate, technology, intellectual property, litigation, insurance, competition and employment law. The firm, which boasts high-profile clients such as Google, Facebook and LinkedIn, posted revenues of $674m (£446m) for 2013.
"It is fantastic to be able to launch in the UK with such a great team already in place," said Stock. "I am energised by the sheer talent, personality and determination of all who are involved in this exciting opportunity. We are ready to build a thriving and successful UK-based practice together."
Alongside the firm's 10 offices in its US homelands, Cooley also has a presence in Shanghai, which opened in 2011.
