Kennedys has opened its first offices in Scotland, giving it a presence across all jurisdictions in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

The litigation and insurance focused firm has opened offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow, recruiting two partners who will jointly oversee the firm's new operations in Scotland.

Frank Gill, former principal at litigation boutique Francis Gill & Co, joins the firm alongside his litigation team, which includes one fee earner. The legacy litigation firm has strong ties with Kennedys, having acted alongside it on a number of occasions.

In addition, Kennedys has taken on insurance and regulatory partner Rory Jackson from Scottish firm McClure Naismith. Jackson's practice focuses on insurance liability, health and safety and environmental law.

"It was a gap, and it was a gap that we have been trying to fill for a while," Kennedys senior partner Nick Thomas told Legal Week. "We tried to do something last year with Simpson & Marwick in Scotland. Both sides tried to make it work but we couldn't. This is a much more Kennedys way of doing it, start small and grow.

"If you look at our history we have done the same thing in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and indeed London - start small and grow. Twenty years ago we were a small firm".

The proposed merger with Scotland's Simpson & Marwick was called off in December 2013, with the firms citing "complex reasons" for the collapse of the deal.

The Edinburgh and Glasgow openings bring Kennedys' global office tally to 21. The firm last year posted a 10% rise in turnover for 2013-14, growing to
