Legal Week has launched a set of awards to promote innovation within the UK legal profession.

The Legal Innovation Awards, which will take place in London on 22 May, are targeted at teams and individuals in non fee earning roles who are playing a leading role in driving forward their businesses.

They will be open to law firms, alternative business structures and other providers of legal services and cover the gamut of internal functions, including technology, recruitment, finance, marketing, business development, operations and human resources.

Flagship awards include The Future of Legal Services Innovation, which recognises the over-arching achievement of a law firm, alternative business structure, in-house legal team or other legal services provider, and the International Innovation award, which will go to a project or initiative that improves service delivery across an international network.

The launch of the awards coincides with Clifford Chance's (CC's) appointment of Amsterdam managing partner Bas Boris Visser as the firm's first global head of innovation and business change and the launch of its strategy review, which puts innovation and change at the centre of the firm's future.

The independent judging panel will comprise a carefully selected group of top executives, regulators and advisers. It includes former CC senior partner Stuart Popham, vice chairman of banking for Europe at Citi, Paul Philip, chief executive of the Solicitors Regulation Authority, Oonagh Harpur, a non-executive director at The Treasury Solicitor's Department, and Dame Janet Gaymer (pictured), who co-chaired the consultation steering panel for the Legal Services Education and Training Review.

The deadline for awards entries is 20 March, the shortlist will be announced on 3 April and the awards will be presented at a lunchtime ceremony at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower hotel in London.
