Dentons' UK, Middle East and Africa chief executive Matthew Jones has announced that he will not seek re-appointment when his term ends next month.

The regional chief executive (pictured), who is responsible for the UK, Middle East and Africa region (UKMEA), will continue to serve on Dentons' global board and will remain a partner at the firm.

Legal Week understands the process to appoint a new regional chief executive is already underway. The appointment of the board's recommended candidate will be subject to the approval of the partners.

Global chief executive of Dentons Elliott Portnoy said: "Matthew's contributions to the firm have been many, leading the region's financial, brand, talent and reputational transformation. As a result we have seen significant increases in revenue and profitability in the region, helping to attract outstanding new talent."

Jones has held the role for four years, leading the region through two combinations. He held the position during the merger of SNR Denton, Salans and Fraser Milner Casgrain to Dentons in 2013 and the firm's recent combination with Chinese firm Dacheng, announced last month.

In his role Jones has also overseen the opening of the firm's inaugural South African office in Cape Town last year, and its second base in Johannesburg this month.

Jones said the firm was "on the cusp of even more success" and it was "time to pass on the baton".

He added: "I wish my successor well and look forward to the firm continuing to flourish."

Prior to becoming UKMEA chief executive Jones was the co-head of energy, transport and infrastructure sector and head of the energy, infrastructure and project finance department in London.

Last week, the firm's UKMEA arm reported a 34% rise in operating profit.
