Allen & Overy (A&O) has seen a trio of Americas partners quit for Paul Hastings, including the sole partner in its Sao Paulo office, Bruno Soares.
Soares left the magic circle firm on 6 March alongside New York-based Latin America practice co-head Robert Kartheiser and fellow New York partner Cathleen McLaughlin.
According to the firm's website, the departure of banking partner Soares leaves A&O with just one senior associate and one associate on the ground.
A&O is now set to review its Brazil office, with all options likely to be considered including closing the office, hiring laterally, running the office without a partner and relocating partners from elsewhere.
Paul Hastings is currently seeking regulatory approval for a potential new office in Sao Paulo. Soares will be based in New York with the other two A&O recruits until his planned move to staff a new Sao Paulo base is given the green light.
The US firm is looking to carry out projects, M&A, banking and capital markets work in Brazil. The firm would not be drawn on the timing and the size of any potential office while discussions with regulators are still ongoing.
Finance specialist Kartheiser and Soares, then a senior counsel, helped establish A&O's Sao Paulo office in 2008.
An A&O spokesman said that a "substantial number" of partners remained at the firm doing Latin American work across many of its offices.
According to the firm's website, A&O's Latin America team is "primarily based in New York", where the firm lists a total of 31 partners, excluding Friday's two departures from the office.
A&O's Latin America practice focuses on corporate finance, including banking, project finance, capital markets, derivatives, securitisations, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings and insolvency.
The firm is yet to decide on a successor for Kartheiser's role or for McLaughlin, who also served as head of the New York office's international capital markets group.
A number of partners who are currently engaged in ad-hoc work involving the Americas may pick up more work as a result of the departures, the spokesman added.
In a statement, A&O said: "We would like to thank them for their contribution during their time at Allen & Overy and wish them all the best for the future."
