Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer will bring a centre director to lead its upcoming Manchester low-cost office from outside the firm and relocate at least two partners, its managing partner has said.

The firm is set to open a legal and business support hub for its international offices in Manchester by the end of the year.

Speaking to Legal Week, Freshfields managing partner David Aitman said the firm had already completed the hire of a person from outside the firm to lead the office.

He said: "We have all the governance arrangements ready to go in terms of both who will be the centre director and which partners will have responsibility for different bits.

"It is likely that we will have a very small group of partners with different responsibilities."

However, Aitman declined to name the centre director or the partners who would move across to Manchester.

It is understood that one partner will be in charge of the support service arm of the office, with another due to oversee legal services provision once that side is up and running.

Aitman added that the firm will also be setting up another team of staff to monitor client feedback and centre performance.

Aitman said the pay for staff at the low-cost centre would be "competitive" with other employers in the local market, and that the firm has already formed "an idea of what the competitive rate is for the different functions".

At the time of writing, the firm was still looking at both short and long-term leases, with select support and legal personnel to be in place by the end of the summer.

Freshfields is the latest in a string of firms to open low-cost centres in Manchester. Berwin Leighton Paisner  announced a new low-cost legal services centre in Manchester last March, while Latham & Watkins set out plans for its own support centre in the city this January.

Nabarro also raided Addleshaw Goddard's real estate practice to launch its first office in the Manchester last May.
