Pinsent Masons has appointed Martin Bishop as financial institutions group head, the position left vacant after former head John Cleland won the firm's managing partner election last year.

Bishop, who currently leads Pinsents' banking and finance team in London, has been at the firm since 2003. He has strong relationships with large banking clients. It is understood that chief among these is HSBC.

He has also secured mandates with high-profile companies in the energy, telecoms and healthcare industries.

He will take control of the firm's financial services division, which is thought to generate around 20% of Pinsents' turnover, from 1 May, when Cleland becomes managing partner.

Speaking to Legal Week, incoming managing partner Cleland called Bishop an "outstanding lawyer" who was "sure to take the group forward".

Cleland added that in the firm's last half-year financial results six of Pinsents' top 10 billing clients were financial institutions.

In December Cleland defeated Adrian Barlow, group head of property, and Richard Masters, head of client operations, in a three-horse race for the top job at the firm, which had been held by David Ryan for the last 16 years.

Ryan is understood to have kept some management responsibilities after the reshuffle, including overseeing the firm's lateral hiring programme.
