While many IT directors are well-versed in implementing large-scale IT projects, the changing landscape of legal services delivery is requiring them to get on board with game-changing projects that fundamentally overhaul the structure and culture of law firms. An expert panel including Oliver Campbell, global head of client service solutions at Clifford Chance, Ian Jeffrey, managing partner of Lewis Silkin, and Nabarro partner Stephen Scott will debate what the appetite for this change is and what the long-term impact will be at Legal Week's Strategic Technology Forum in June.
As the legal services market evolves, delegates at the event, which will be held in Portugal from 24-26 June, will look at how technology can make everyday project management more efficient. As part of this, Lionel Bird, head of projects and programmes at Norton Rose Fulbright, Debbie Rayner, head of IT and business systems at Ogier, and Mayer Brown global CIO Philip Scorgie will offer tips on how to get lawyers to adopt this technology.
Data and security will also form a key part of the conference, with Sue Hall, Linklaters' former head of information systems strategy, outlining the latest cyber threats for firms as well as pointing to some salient recent case studies. Another session will look at issues surrounding private information stored in the cloud, and how the flow of information between the US and EU countries is working in practice following the adoption of the Safe Harbour principles.
Delegates at the three-day conference will also hear from Baker & McKenzie's global director of financial systems, Martin Telfer, about his firm's recent enterprise resource planning project. Taking 15 months and involving 47 countries, 78 offices, 21 languages, almost 100 interfaces and 44 key business processes, Bakers sees this as its platform for growth and expansion. Telfer will outline the lessons learned during the process, including how to manage a project of such scale and how users interact with the new system.
Neil Cameron, managing director of Neil Cameron Consulting Group, who is chairing the conference, commented: "In the European legal IT world there are now more and more shows and exhibitions, but fewer and fewer conferences with heavy-hitting content and-high quality attendees. The Strategic Technology Forum is now indisputably the leader in this category. The forum has always been a great environment to learn about interesting stuff, but it also provides plenty of social time for senior IT managers to share and discuss key emerging issues in a private atmosphere."
