The judges praised ELM Law for its "novel and interesting approach" to environmental law and for providing effective legal solutions to help improve the environment.

"We are passionate about using our environmental law expertise, insight and position of influence to make a real difference on green issues," the Manchester-based firm said in its submission.

ELM Law has improved environmental standards in conveyancing transactions by providing specialist training to property lawyers, and has launched a legislation update service on green issues. Profits from the service are reinvested into the local environment and social projects.

The firm is also an active participant in community affairs, with founder Keith Davidson having held a variety of public roles including environment commissioner for Greater Manchester and low-carbon hub member for the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities.

The region has set itself the target of reducing collective carbon emissions by 48% by 2020 on 1990 levels. This aim is aspirational and above compliance with the UK government target of 34%.
