Linklaters has appointed former foreign secretary William Hague to chair its newly formed International Advisory Group to work on the firm's strategy.

According to a press spokesperson, Hague will "get an eclectic group together", which will offer "strategic macroeconomic advice" for the magic circle firm "from an outsider's perspective" to help it refine its strategy.

Over the next few months, Hague will select members with international experience before the group launches officially on 1 September ahead of the firm's next global partners' meeting scheduled for November in London.

Hague said: "This group will be flexible and pragmatic in how it supports the firm… My priority will be to find innovative and influential thinkers who are well renowned in their fields."

Linklaters' chairman and senior partner, Robert Elliott, said: "Under William's leadership, this group will provide us with an extra gear in making the most of current opportunities and shaping the long-term future of the firm."

It is not yet known how many members the group will have. As it develops, it will be asked to play a role in the firm's global partners' meetings.

These meetings have become more regular of late. There is at least one annual meeting in April but last year, for the first time in a several years, the firm reintroduced a second meeting in November.
