Olswang's German arm has been dealt another blow as Munich-based intellectual property partner Herbert Kunz has left the firm along with three of his team to join US litigation specialist Fish & Richardson.

Kunz has taken up the role of managing principal at Fish & Richardson's Munich office.

The departures follow news last month that the firm's entire Berlin office, comprising 50 lawyers, is leaving to join Greenberg Traurig.

Leaving alongside Kunz is patent attorney Volker Kuhn, who has joined Fish & Richardson as of counsel, a part-time patent administrator and a personal assistant.

Kunz and Kuhn joined Olswang in May last year, alongside counsel Tobias Reker.

Prior to the trio's arrival there were five people in Olswang's patent prosecution team, following the team's departure there are now 10.

Following the closure of its Berlin practice the firm has been refocusing around its TMT-centred Munich office.

Olswang has also seen its Madrid office downsized with lawyer numbers falling from a 2011 high of 30 to five currently. It is now set to move to new premises in the Spanish capital, with local partners suggesting that the firm is taking on less space than in its current Paseo de la Castellana base.

Sources close to the firm have said that after the loss of Berlin and the downsizing in Madrid, Olswang is in a process of "renewal" and prioritising its TMT and intellectual property core.

Olswang maintains that it has for many years had a strategy of being a "leading international TMT law firm focused on both Europe and Asia".
