Bowman Gilfillan, Allen & Overy and White & Case set to contest African Legal Awards
Raft of African and international law firms make shortlist for awards ceremony to be held on 16 October

Bowman Gilfillan Africa Group, Allen & Overy (A&O) and White & Case are among the firms shortlisted for Legal Week's annual African Legal Awards.
Bowman is in contention for the African Law Firm of the Year award alongside Linklaters ally Webber Wentzel, Nigeria's Aluko & Oyebode, South Africa's Spoor & Fisher and Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr and Kenyan firm Anjarwalla & Khanna.
Meanwhile, A&O and White & Case face stiff competition in the International Law Firm of the Year category, with other shortlisted candidates including Chadbourne & Parke, Baker & McKenzie, Norton Rose Fulbright and Clyde & Co.
The key individual award for in-house counsel – General Counsel of the Year – will be contested by Madeleine Truter from The Pivotal Fund, Pieter Badenhorst from AFGRI and Charlene Louw from Road Accident Fund.
Practice awards see firms including Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Hogan Lovells, Eversheds and Linklaters up for the M&A Team of the Year, while candidates for Litigation Team of the Year include Simmons & Simmons, Webber Wentzel and Eversheds.
The winners will be decided by a panel of senior judges including Bill Skirving of Hannover Reinsurance Group Africa, Jonathan Maphosa of South African Reserve Bank and Sandy Oberholzer of Tiger Brands. The winners will be announced at ceremony held on 16 October at The Wanderers Club in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
