Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has boosted its Hong Kong disputes practice with the hire of Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe partner Robert Pe.

The hire brings the firm's partner head count in Hong Kong to six, with Pe the first sole arbitration partner in the office.

Ken Doran, managing partner of Gibson Dunn, said: "We have continued to expand our Asia practices, and, with that growth, there is increased demand for disputes capability in the region."

Co-chair of the firm's international arbitration group Cyrus Benson said growing disputes capabilities in Asia was a "strategic goal" of the firm.

Pe's practice focuses on international arbitrations and disputes and he also has experience in commercial litigation and corporate investigations.

In addition he has served as senior advisor on legal affairs to Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi since 2012.

He joined Orrick's Hong Kong office as a partner in 2007, prior to which he was Hong Kong head of litigation at Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker. He has also worked at legacy Lovells in London and Hong Kong.

Gibson Dunn is the latest in a handful of firms that have been building up their arbitration and disputes practices in the region over the summer.

Last month, Baker & McKenzie hired White & Case dispute resolution partner Joel Greer in Tokyo, while Winston & Strawn's Asia litigation head Adrian Yip left the firm for Morrison & Foerster.

White & Case has announced the relocation of Paris-based arbitration partner Matthew Secomb to Singapore to strengthen the firm's capabilities in the region particularly within the construction and energy sectors.
