Bird & Bird has lost a 20-lawyer team in Hamburg, including five partners, to DLA Piper.

The partners moving to DLA are technology, media and telecommunications partner Stefan Engels, corporate partners Jorg Paura and Daniel Weiss, litigation partner Michael Stulz-Herrnstadt and intellectual property partner Ulrike Grübler.

The partners all previously joined Bird & Bird from Hogan Lovells when it launched in Hamburg in 2011 following the merger between legacy firms Lovells and Hogan & Hartson in 2010.

DLA has five offices in Germany. It already has five partners and 16 associates and counsel in Hamburg. With the new additions, it will remain the firm's second smallest office after Berlin.

In a joint statement DLA Germany managing partners Bernd Borgmann and Benjamin Parameswaran said: "The addition of this large and market-leading team is a significant reinforcement for our German practice and the Hamburg office."

The news comes after BLP snapped up a six-lawyer team from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe in Berlin last week.

Some firms, such as Clifford Chance (CC), have opted to cut back their presence in Germany.

Other exits have involved whole teams moving to rival firms or setting up boutiques. For example, Olswang's entire Berlin office is moving to US rival Greenberg Traurig in October.
