City firm RPC has hired former Worldpay corporate general counsel Matthew Griffith as a partner.

Griffith joins the firm's corporate insurance and financial services team today, taking the total partner count in the group to six.

He worked as corporate GC at UK payment processing group Worldpay from 2012 until January this year. At Worldpay, Griffith led the corporate legal team, focussing on UK and international M&A and corporate finance.

Before that he worked at two law firms as an insurance partner, firstly at Pinsent Masons for five years and afterwards at Sidley Austin for two years until moving in-house in 2012.

RPC managing partner Jonathan Watmough said Griffith's experience in-house and in private practice means he understands how to build "long-term mutually beneficial relationships" and will help the firm "sharpen" its client focus.

James Mee, head of RPC's corporate insurance and financial services team, said Griffith would also help the firm expand its wider financial services business.

There are now six partners, one legal director and one consultant in the firm's corporate insurance and financial services team.

Griffith's hire follows the launch of the firm's management consultancy RPC Consulting in February and the acquisition of software business Marriott Sinclair, in July.

Worldpay announced plans last month to list on the London Stock Exchange in October. The IPO is expected to raise about £890m in what is set to be the biggest initial public offering in London this year.

Allen & Overy (A&O) is advising Worldpay, while Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Weil Gotshal & Manges have won roles advising the underwriters and private equity owners respectively.
