Insurance-led firm Clyde & Co has expanded its South Africa offering with the hire of five partners and five other lawyers.

Two of the new partner recruits come from Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF), two from ENSafrica and one from Bowman Gilfillan.

Tony Hardie is a litigator who joins the firm as a partner having previously been head of Norton Rose's Johannesburg insurance practice.

He is joined by Norton Rose partner Amelia Costa who focuses on insurance work, including coverage disputes, subrogated recoveries, regulatory matters and defence work.

Robert Scott comes to the firm from ENSafrica where he is a partner. Scott's practice focuses on commercial litigation, insurance and construction.

Alon Meyerov joins the firm from ENSafrica where he is a partner advising on disputes in the construction sector.

Bowman Gilfillan partner Athol Gordon joins Cyldes with a practice focused on medical malpractice claims and commercial litigation in the oil and gas sector.

Hardie, Costa, Scott and Meyerov join the firm in Johannesburg and Gordon joins the firm in Cape Town.

Five other lawyers also joined Clydes from Norton Rose, ENSafrica and Linklaters ally Webber Wentzel.

Clyde & Co senior partner James Burns said the firm was in the "second phase" of building up its South Africa offices. He added: "The Clyde & Co approach to opening in target markets is to find a first class team in one of our core sectors and to then build out from there in line with our clients' needs."

The firm launched in South Africa in 2014 with a five partner team from Webber Wentzel.

Norton Rose has lost five partners in South Africa in recent weeks after the latest hires by Clydes.

Earlier this month Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyer (CDH) announced that it had hired three Norton Rose finance partners, Gavin Noeth, Pierre Swart and Bridget King, within the last two months.

They were joined at the firm by new finance partner Carmen de Villiers who was previously an associate at Webber Wentzel, and employee benefits partner Zaaheda Mayet who joined from Cheadle Thompson & Haysom where she was a partner.
