Kenyan firm Anjarwalla & Khanna impressed the judges with a growth streak that has seen it become the largest law firm in Eastern Africa. With a growth rate of 25% for the last seven years, the firm has become the leading full-service corporate law firm in Kenya, while it claims its wider Africa network, ALN-Africa, is the continent's widest and most integrated. The network has member firms in 12 countries with an associate member in South Africa.

Staff numbers have grown from 150 to 180 over the last year, requiring the firm to expand its office space. It has also opened offices in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and grown its presence in Dubai.

Key deals the firm has worked on recently include acting as lead counsel for Econet Wireless on its acquisition of operating companies in Burundi and the Central African Republic (CAR) from Vimpelcom, and representing Helios Investment Partners on its sale of a minority interest in a pan-African bank to Norfund.

The judges praised the winning firm for its "African Spirit" and for its role as "the beating heart" of one of the most integrated group of law firms operating on the continent.
