Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) and Norton Rose Fulbright have advised on a Chinese and Malaysian energy deal worth $2.3bn (£1.5bn).

HSF is advising China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) on its proposed acquisition of Edra Global Energy Berhad, the second-largest power producer in Malaysia.

The multi-jurisdictional, cross-practice HSF team is being led by Singapore-based energy partner David Clinch and includes lawyers in Southeast Asia, Australia, China and the UK.

In Singapore, Clinch is being assisted on corporate matters by partner Brian Scott, while Singapore based finance partners Adrian Cheng and Philip Lee are advising on financing matters.

Disputes input is being provided by partner Alastair Henderson in Singapore. HSF's Asia head of competition Mark Jephcott is advising on the antitrust aspects of the deal from Hong Kong alongside head of competition, regulation and trade James Quinney in London.

Tax issues are being handled by London head of tax Isaac Zailer, while all China-related matters are being dealt with by corporate partner Matt Emsley with energy partner Monica Sun providing support in Beijing.

Malaysian firm Skrine is working alongside HSF as counsel.

Norton Rose Fulbright is advising  Edra on the sale, with a team led by energy practice head Vincent Dwyer in Singapore.

Global head of infrastructure, mining and commodities Nick Merritt is advising on the project finance elements of the deal while London-based partner Dominic Stuttaford is advising on the tax elements and corporate partner Emma de Ronde is assisting on the deal's Hong Kong-related aspects.

Malaysian firms Rahmat & Lim and Deol & Gill are advising Edra alongside Norton Rose.

The assets that are the subject of the deal include interests in 13 power plants in Malaysia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. The sale is expected to complete in February 2016.
