Mayer Brown has hired two partners from Baker & McKenzie as it plans to open a Dubai office in 2016.

The firm has hired Baker & McKenzie corporate and securities partners Charles Salem Hallab and Tahan Thraya.

Hallab was based in Washington DC and was Bakers' head of corporate for DC, a member of the firm's oversight committee for North America and a member of the firm's Middle East governing body.

Mayer Brown has appointed Hallab chair of its Middle East practice and leader of its international joint venture and strategic alliance practice. Hallab will be based in the firm's Washington DC and Chicago offices.

Thraya was a founder of Bakers' Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha offices and was head of the firm's UAE corporate and commercial practice.

He will initially be based in the US, but is projected to be partner-in-charge of the firm's new Dubai office, which is currently expected to launch in 2016, subject to regulatory approval.

The new office will be Mayer Brown's first in the region. It currently has offices across the US, Europe and Asia and launched in Mexico City earlier this year.

In a statement Mayer Brown said "key associates" from Thraya and Hallab's teams would also be joining Mayer Brown.

It's not yet clear who will replace Hallab and Thraya in their various Bakers management roles.

Fellow US firm Shearman & Sterling launched in Dubai in September, while UK firm DWF opened its first international office in the emirate in March.
