US firm Shearman & Sterling has focused its 12-strong global promotions round on the UK promoting five City lawyers to partner.

It is a marked increase compared to last year when just two City lawyers were promoted out of a 13-strong group.

The new London partners are Susanna Charlwood in litigation, Marwa Elborai in capital markets, Simon Letherman in tax, Korey Fevzi in finance and Matthew Powell in M&A.

Elsewhere in Europe, Shearman also promoted two Paris international arbitration lawyers to partner. Four of the remaining spots were handed to New York lawyers while one Singapore international arbitration lawyer, Daryl Chew, also made the grade.

Last year, the firm promoted one lawyer in Europe outside of the UK, Paris international arbitration partner Jennifer Younan.

In 2014, a trio of Asia-based lawyers were promoted including two Hong Kong lawyers and one Singapore lawyer. Washington has missed out this year but three lawyers were promoted in the US capital last year.

Broken down by practice, M&A, capital markets and international arbitration saw the most appointments with three promotions each.

Last month, Latham & Watkins added four partners in London in its global promotions round, which saw 25 lawyers made up overall.

Kirkland & Ellis recently promoted eight London lawyers to partner out of 90 promotions in total. The promotions took effect from 1 October.

Previously, US rivals Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and McDermott Will & Emery unveiled promotions rounds in which they did not promote any London associates to partner.
