Ashurst finance partner Anna Delgado was praised by clients who responded to the Legal Week 2015 Best Legal Adviser survey for being "responsive and friendly", "commercial and focused" and for having "excellent client skills".
She joined Ashurst as a senior associate in 2004 and progressed to partner in 2006. She specialises in debt and equity-linked capital markets issues and has advised issuers and underwriters on a wide range of capital markets products.
Key clients include Bank of America Merrill Lynch, ANZ, RBS, Lloyds, ICG, Morrisons and William Hill. Recent work she has handled has included advising Shanks on a green bond issuance (the first ORB listed green bond), acting for Bank of America Merrill Lynch on jumbo programmes, and advising on liability management issues for retail bonds.
What is the key to good client relations?
Knowing your clients is absolutely fundamental, both as individuals and as institutions. You need to understand what drives their businesses, what their challenges are and use global expertise to devise new ideas and solutions. You also need to understand precisely what your clients expect of you and work collaboratively.
How do you see the relationship between partners and clients developing in the future?
Lawyers will have to act more as business advisers, not only legal advisers. We will have to keep coming up with more innovative ways to add value and deliver our services efficiently. We will also need to place even more emphasis on the diversity of our teams.
What tips would you offer young lawyers/new partners just starting to build a client base?
Young lawyers need to start building their client bases from the outset and invest significant time in it. I would advise them to be patient and persevere, because it does take a while and you may not see results immediately. It is also important to be fully aware of the exact capabilities of your firm so you can identify opportunities both for your firm and the client.
What do in-house counsel most value from their external lawyers/law firms… and where do people most often slip up?
In my experience clients need their external lawyers to understand their businesses, to be agile, proactive and responsive. Advisers need to be careful not to be complacent; it takes a lot to build a strong relationship and you need to keep investing in it. Good communication is absolutely vital.
