DWF is to merge with German commercial firm BridgehouseLaw, the firm announced today, as Pinsent Masons announced it is hiring two German partners.

BridgehouseLaw has four equity partners and has offices in Cologne and Munich.

The firm focuses on advising overseas companies on their expansion in Germany and German companies on their expansion abroad. It has a strong focus on the US and the Middle East.

It advises on commercial issues such as M&A, franchise law, dispute resolution, employment, IT and intellectual property.

The firm mostly works in the energy, retail, real estate and technology sectors. Its clients include telecoms company Deutsche Telecom, energy technology company Carbo, engineer MEP and software developer Univa.

DWF managing partner Andrew Leaitherland said the German firm was "a strong strategic fit with DWF" and would give it "capability in key geographic regions" where there were growth opportunities.

BridgehouseLaw's Michael Falter said: "In combining our strengths there's a real opportunity for us to enhance our international capability for the benefit of our clients."

Corporate specialist Falter will become an equity partner of DWF and managing partner of DWF Germany.

BridgehouseLaw's three other equity partners, dispute resolution head Oliver Bolthausen, IT lawyer Klaus Brisch and corporate lawyer Mathias Reif, will become equity partners of DWF.

Earlier this month DWF opened an office in Brussels led by the firm's EU & competition head Jonathan Branton.

The firm launched its first international office in Dubai earlier this year with the hire of two lawyers from Holland & Knight.

Meanwhile, Pinsent Masons has expanded its German offering with the hire of a four-lawyer team in Munich from capital markets boutique Mayrhofer + Partner.

Thomas Mayrhofer and Alexander Thomas join Pinsents as partners while Gudrun Moll joins as a legal director and Hans-Ulrich Birkhofer joins as a consultant.

Mayrhofer, who focuses on advising small and mid-cap companies on IPOs and other capital markets matters, founded the firm in 2000.

Thomas joined Mayrhofer + Partner in 2004 after two years in-house at EON Energy. He advises small and mid-cap clients on corporate and capital markets law.
