Olswang's former chief executive David Stewart has joined freelance arbitrator group JAMS international.

Stewart will work on panels in London, New York and Miami. His main focus will be on developing the offshore arbitration dispute resolution market in the Caribbean.

Stewart is based in the Caribbean having joined Turks & Caicos firm Griffiths & Partners last summer as a partner in the non-contentious practice.

Speaking to Legal Week, Stewart said: "I will be particularly looking for opportunities in offshore trust disputes around the world including in Europe, the US, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands.

"The key areas I will be working in include offshore trust related disputes, general commercial international arbitration and regulatory disputes across media, sports and financial services."

Stewart added that he has known the organisation for a "long time" and first got in touch with JAMS through the late David Shapiro, co-founder of Washington-based firm Dickstein Shapiro, while they were both partners at legacy SJ Berwin.

Stewart left Olswang in October 2014, having unexpectedly stepped down from his management role halfway through his term earlier that month.

Stewart resigned as chief executive just 18 months after he was re-elected to a second three-year term in 2013. He became Olswang's chief executive in 2010, when it dropped the managing partner position he had held since 2007.
