Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has bagged the lead role advising Australian retail group Wesfarmers' on its multi-million pound purchase of UK DIY retailer Homebase.

The Australian giant, which owns retail brands including Target, K-Mart and Coles in its homeland, has bought Homebase for £340m from its current owner Home Retail Group.

HSF's team on the deal is being led by London-baser corporate partner Mark Bardell.

The purchase of Homebase comes just over a week after Sainsbury's made a bid for Home Retail Group, which was subsequently rejected.

Home Retail Group has turned to Linklaters for advice on both bids. The firm is fielding a team led by London corporate partners Owen Clay and Nick Garland.

Sainsbury's has appointed Clifford Chance (CC) as its adviser. CC's team is being led by London corporate partner Patrick Sarch alongside global head of corporate Guy Norman, UK head of finance Michael Bates, London antitrust partner Alastair Mordaunt and associate Katherine Moir.

HSF's recent mandates on deals include advising British American Tobacco (BAT) on its acquisition of Polish e-cigarette company CHIC group and advising BevCo Ltd, the second largest shareholder in SABMiller, on the merger of Anheuser-Busch (AB) InBev and SABMiller.

In the retail space, Linklaters picked up a mandate from South African household retailer Steinhoff on its €18.6bn (£13.5bn) listing on the Frankfurt stock exchange last December.
