Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson has launched a London restructuring practice with the hire of Mayer Brown's co-head of restructuring, bankruptcy and insolvency Ashley Katz.

The firm announced today that Katz will join as a partner in the bankruptcy and restructuring practice.

Katz has extensive experience advising financial institutions, borrowers, bondholders, insolvency practitioners and distressed investors in relation to all aspects of restructuring and insolvency matters.

He advises on a range of cross-border and UK restructurings and insolvencies – including matters in the automotive, real estate, construction, financial services, retail and leisure sectors.

Katz left Mayer Brown after eight years having joined in 2008 from Allen & Overy where he was a senior associate.

The announcement comes after a busy 12 months of hiring in the City for the US firm.

Funds trio Mark Mifsud, Kate Downey and Alexandra Conroy joined Fried Frank in May from Kirkland & Ellis, following in the footsteps of former Kirkland London senior partner Graham White, who moved to Fried Frank to lead its City practice in December 2014.

Also in May, Fried Frank hired banking partner Stuart Brinkworth from Hogan Lovells as its first head of finance in London.

In July, regulatory partner Gregg Beechey left King & Wood Mallesons to join Fried Frank as a partner in the asset management practice.
