News UK has appointed Kingsley Napley partner Angus McBride as its new general counsel (GC), replacing current legal head Emma Moloney.
McBride, who represented News UK CEO Rebekah Brooks during the phone hacking trial in 2013-14, joins the publishing company in his first in-house role. He has been a partner at Kingsley Napley since 1999.
In his new role, McBride will oversee all legal activity and compliance for all of the company's publications, including The Times and The Sun newspapers.
McBride will join News UK, subsidiary of US media group News Corp, in April.
In a statement on his appointment, Brooks said she had come to trust McBride "implicitly"
McBride replaces Moloney who was promoted to GC in May last year after working as interim GC since September 2014.
Her interim appointment followed the death of former GC Paul Chinnery.
She will leave the business at the end of January for a role yet to be announced.
News UK has been involved in a raft of high-profile legal battles relating to the phone-hacking allegations since 2009. Olswang acted for News UK, then News International, in a number of the cases with a team led by the firm's head of judicial review and public law, Dan Tench.
When News UK brokered a deal to move its headquarters to the News Building next to the Shard in 2013 it turned to Hogan Lovells, which fielded a London team led by real estate partner Dion Panambalana.
