Clifford Chance's Australia managing partner is set to leave the firm along with a fellow founding partner of the magic circle firm's Australia practice.

Sydney-based managing partner Mark Pistilli and M&A partner Danny Simmons are both leaving the firm, and will be on gardening leave until the end of June.

The pair were part of the magic circle firm's initial team in the country coming on board when it merged with Sydney firm Chang Pistilli & Simmons in 2011.

Litigation partner Diana Chang, one of the other founders, is understood to be set to take over as CC's managing partner for Australia.

The firm will have 15 partners in the country following the departure of Simmons and Pistilli.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "Mark and Danny have made a valuable contribution to the firm over the past five years as, together, we have established a strong and growing practice in Australia.

"They have now decided that the time is right for them to step down to pursue new opportunities outside the firm. We thank them both for their hard work and leadership during their time at Clifford Chance and wish them the best of luck for their future careers."

Despite declining commodity prices hitting the jurisdiction hard, and the dominant resources scene on a downward trend, Australia has continued to prove an attractive market to firms in recent years. Firms including Ashurst, Norton Rose Fulbright, Herbert Smith Freehills, King & Wood Mallesons and Allen & Overy all launched a presence in the country in recent years.

Meanwhile, Hogan Lovells set up shop last year with a two partner team hired from Linklaters ally Allens while Pinsent Masons also opened offices in Sydney and Melbourne.
