Legal Week has teamed up with The American Lawyer and Law.com for the launch of the 2016 Legal Week Best Employers research.

Law firms have until 15 April to register to take part in the programme, which is conducted in partnership with employee engagement specialists Best Companies Group.

The research allows firms to measure and benchmark the satisfaction of their assistant solicitors against a range of criteria specifically chosen to be relevant for fee earners working in the highly pressurised field of business law.

For the first time The American Lawyer and law.com will join forces with Legal Week as media partners for the research. The move follows last month's purchase of Legal Week by ALM, which also publishes legal titles including Corporate Counsel and The National Law Journal.

The survey asks respondents to rate a range of factors affecting their working lives, including the quality of work at their firms, their treatment by partners, benefits and career opportunities.

Among the recommendations in last year's report, which was written by leading legal commentator Dominic Carman, were for law firms to review their bonus structures – a source of considerable discontent – and take flexible working more seriously. Carman also highlighted the need for partners to get better at providing feedback to their associates.

robert-haltonRobert Halton (pictured right), chief people officer at participating firm Burges Salmon, said: "The Best Employers Survey has given us a reliable and consistent measure of the views of our people over a good many years which has helped us develop and adapt our approach to create a great place to work at Burges Salmon."

The research also includes an employers' survey, which documents the benefits, training and incentives provided by each participating firm.

Those firms which reach the requisite satisfaction levels, have a sufficiently high response rate and offer competitive and imaginative benefits and incentives are awarded Best Employer quality marks.

Last year, 16 leading UK and US firms took part in the programme and ten were awarded Best Legal Adviser status, including Burges Salmon, CMS Cameron McKenna, McDermott Will & Emery and Shoosmiths.

The 2016 survey will take place in May and the results will be published in June.
