Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom has hired former US federal prosecutor Steve Kwok as a partner in Hong Kong.

Kwok was most recently a resident legal advisor for the US Department of Justice at the US embassy in Beijing, representing the United States in discussions with Chinese law enforcement authorities on criminal matters.

At Skadden, Kwok will focus on internal investigation and US regulatory enforcement matters as well as working on trial and appellate litigation in US federal and state courts.

He will work alongside Hong Kong partner Bradley Klein and eight additional lawyers dedicated to investigations and government enforcement matters in both the firm's Hong Kong and Beijing offices.

The investigations team also works closely with Skadden's Asia litigation and international arbitration team, which is led by Hong Kong partner Rory McAlpine and includes a total of 12 US -trained lawyers who speak Mandarin.

Kwok, who was born in Hong Kong, is fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin.

He moved to Beijing in late 2013 as a US Justice Attache in China. Before that, he served as an assistant US attorney in the Southern District of New York where he prosecuted cases involving securities, commodities and other investment fraud schemes.

Kwok is the first lateral hire Skadden has made in Asia since May 2012 when M&A partner Christopher Betts joined from Paul Hastings. The New York-based firm now has 70 lawyers in Hong Kong, including 14 partners.
