Royal Dutch Shell has launched a review of its legal panel following its £47bn takeover of BG Group last month.
Shell, which last reviewed its panel in 2013, will ultimately use its panel for all new matters involving the merged company.
However, there will be a period where it will continue with the BG panel for existing cases.
Firms on the current 11-strong Shell line-up include Allen & Overy (A&O), Baker & McKenzie, Clifford Chance (CC), Norton Rose and Simmons & Simmons.
BG's panel was last reviewed in 2013 and comprises CC, Freshfields and CMS Cameron McKenna.
It is understood that the review will be complete in late April.
Meanwhile, BG Group's legal team is undergoing a restructuring following its takeover by Shell. The two companies will combine their legal departments, which will be based on Shell's systems and processes.
In February, Shell appointed BG's general counsel (GC) Tom Melbye Eide as executive vice president and GC for its upstream business. Fide reports to Shell legal director Donny Ching.
BG has appointed Shell lawyer James Hine as 'transitional' GC with responsibility for overseeing the transfer of BG's legal team into Shell.
The Shell-BG merger deal passed its final regulatory hurdle in late 2015 and Shell won 83% of shareholders' approval for the merger in January.
Slaughter and May advised Shell while BG instructed Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Slaughters' team was headed up by corporate and commercial partners Roland Turnill, Hywel Davies and Rebecca Cousin. Freshfields' team was led by M&A partner Mark Rawlinson and corporate partner Graham Watson.
Shell declined to comment.
