Addleshaw Goddard and Ashurst have both dropped off Aviva's legal panel, it has emerged following a recent review of the panel.

Aviva has confirmed it is sticking with a slimmed down legal panel following a review at the end of last year.

Addleshaw Goddard and Ashurst were among eight firms appointed to the insurer's panel in 2013 but it has emerged that they are no longer on Aviva's panel, though the pair did not drop off the roster at the latest review.

A spokesperson for Aviva said the two firms came off the panel at some point between 2013 and the 2015 review.

At the most recent review, which finished in December 2015, Aviva elected to stick with its six-strong core legal panel and did not invite pitches from non-panel firms.

The core firms are DLA Piper, Allen & Overy, Linklaters, Latham & Watkins and Slaughter and May for London, European and Asia work, while Pinsent Masons advises on UK regional work.

An Aviva spokesperson said: "The panel changes from the 2013 list did not happen during the most recent review. We make adjustments to our panels from time to time in response to the changing needs of the business."

At the last full panel review in 2013, 35 firm's pitched for spots, including magic circle firm Clifford Chance which was unsuccessful.

Firms were rated on market leadership and positioning, experience with Aviva, capability and proposed services, discount levels and flexibility of pricing and volume discounts.

The firm also operates a PLC legal panel for board level advice and has off-panel arrangements with firms for use in specific roles including litigation, employment and insurance work and in specific geographies such as the US, Ireland, Spain and Italy.
