Corporate finance head Charles Penney has been elected as the new senior partner of Addleshaw Goddard.

Penney beat corporate partner Andrew Carpenter to the post after a contested election and partnership vote.

The election was triggered when the incumbent, Monica Burch, announced she was stepping down after two terms in the role.

Corporate finance head Penney joined the firm in 2005 from legacy Lovells. At Lovells he was managing partner of the firm's New York office between 1999 and 2002 and also spent two years as secretary of the UK Takeover Panel.

The firm's managing partner, John Joyce, said: "I am looking forward to the prospect of working closely with Charles in leading our firm to continue to enhance our performance and service."

Penney said: "Alongside client commitments, the continued focus on our growth, our brand and our culture will be key priorities for me as senior partner."

Penney will begin his three year term in the role on 1 May.

Addleshaws was recently in merger talks with Scottish firm Maclay Murray & Spens, but it emerged in February that talks had broken down.
