Kirkland & Ellis has hired a team of M&A lawyers including one partner from Slaughter and May's German best friend firm Hengeler Mueller.
The US firm has added Munich M&A partner Achim Herfs, alongside counsel Anna Schwander and senior associate Benjamin Leyendecker-Langer to Kirkland. All three will join Kirkland's Munich office as partners.
It is the latest high profile hire for the firm in Germany since Latham & Watkins Munich founding partner Jorg Kirchner joined the firm last summer.
Herfs joined Hengeler Mueller in 1993 and was appointed partner in 1997. He was one of the firm's founding partners in Munich, launching the office in 2005. During his time at Hengeler Mueller, he advised German cable operator Tele Columbus and digital marketplace Scout24 on IPOs.
Kirkland corporate partner Volker Kullman said: "Achim Herfs is one of the most senior and well known corporate and capital markets lawyers in Germany.
"Together with Anna and Benjamin, this team builds upon our strong partner bench and capabilities across capital markets and corporate transactions as well as restructurings."
The news comes days after it emerged that a team of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer lawyers are set to exit the firm to start their own boutique in Germany.
Legal Week reported Friday (8 April) that regulatory partner Michael Schaefer and a team of three associates in Hamburg are set to leave the magic circle firm to launch their own law firm.
It also follows a series of exits from Kirkland's London office. In March, Legal Week reported that Kirkland & Ellis has doubled the notice period for departing partners worldwide after seven City partners handed in their notice that month. They included a six-partner team to Sidley Austin and high-yield partner Andy Hagan to Freshfields.
At the same time, the firm has also hired a raft of magic circle partners such as Michael Steele from Freshfields and Matthew Elliott and Paula Riedel from Linklaters.
