Latham hires Freshfields competition partner in Germany
US firm takes on magic circle partner to bolster its competition practice after recruiting the UK Competition and Markets Authority's director of mergers earlier this year

Latham & Watkins has hired another magic circle partner in Germany, bringing in Freshfields competition partner Michael Esser to its Duesseldorf office.
Esser, whose practice has a particular focus on the technology, media and telecoms sector, is currently based in Freshfields' Cologne office, which is due to close at the end of this year.
He has been at Freshfields for more than 20 years, joining in 1993 and making partner in 1997.
Esser's hire will take Latham's EU competition practice to 20 partners and counsel.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.
