Ince & Co is set to launch an insurance-focused office in Cologne with the hire of three lawyers from CMS Hasche Sigle and a further partner from a local firm.

Stefan Segger will join the firm as a partner alongside two associates from CMS Hasche Sigle. Eva-Maria Goergen will join as a partner from German insurance firm Bach Langheid Dallmayr (BLD).

Segger, who was previously head of CMS Germany's insurance group, advises reinsurance and insurance clients on both contentious and non-contentious matters.

BLD partner Goergen advises on contentious insurance matters, with the other two lawyers both focusing on non-marine insurance and reinsurance.

Both partners are subject to notice periods and it is not yet clear when they will join Ince & Co.

The Cologne base will be Ince's second office in Germany, following its 2001 launch in Hamburg.

Jan Heuvels, Ince's international senior partner, said: "Opening an office in Cologne is consistent with our strategy of growing our business in our core sectors and geographies."

He said the new partners "fit perfectly with our firm" and "their legal skills, market expertise and contacts add further strength to our offering to insurance clients in Germany and across our international network".

Ince Hamburg head Jan Hungar added: "Hamburg is a centre for marine insurance, [while] Cologne and nearby Frankfurt are at the heart of the German non-marine insurance and reinsurance markets. Having a presence in both locations will enable us to secure more instructions from existing and target clients."

Ince is in the throes of rebalancing the firm's transactional and disputes practices. This is part of a wider strategic overhaul that has seen a remuneration review, the launch of a consultancy arm and a move to new offices in London.

The new strategy comes in the context of falling revenue and profit at the firm, which led to a partnership restructuring Legal Week reported last year that saw six partners leave, and redundancies in the firm's support functions.

The firm's shipping head, Faz Peermohamed, rejoined the firm in April, just four months after leaving to become CEO of shipping and insurance client, the Norwegian Hull Club.
