The call has gone out for law firms and in-house legal departments to enter the 2016 African Legal awards, which launch today.
The awards put the spotlight on the increasingly competitive African legal market, which has witnessed office launches by several leading international law firms in recent years, including DLA Piper and Herbert Smith Freehills, which both opened for business in Johannesburg last year.
Jointly hosted by Legal Week and the Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa (CCASA) – and with the support of sister titles The American Lawyer and Corporate Counsel magazine – the awards, which are in their fourth year, will take place on 9 September at The Wanderers Club, Johannesburg.
The deadline for submissions is 9 July.
Key awards include International Law Firm of the Year, African Law Firm of the Year (large, small and specialist practice), General Counsel of the Year and Legal Department of the Year. The practice area awards cover: M&A; banking, finance and restructuring; competition and regulation; employment; IP; litigation and dispute resolution; environmental, energy and natural resources; TMT; transportation and infrastructure; and property and construction.
The evening will culminate in the announcement of the winner of the Achievement Award, which is chosen by the CCASA and last year went to Judge Dikgang Moseneke, Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa (pictured).
Major winners in 2015 included Baker & McKenzie, which was named International Law Firm of the Year after also securing the hotly contested Banking, Finance and Restructuring Team of the Year category, while Kenya-based Anjarwalla & Khanna was named African Law Firm of the Year in the large firm category.
Meanwhile, Life Healthcare Group secured the Legal Department of the Year – Small Team award, with South African Reserve Bank winning the large team category.
Alongside Bakers, the international firms to receive awards were DLA Piper, which secured the TMT award; Hogan Lovells (property, and transportation and infrastructure), Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (M&A) and Chadbourne & Parke (environmental, energy and natural resources).
