In this video interview for the First 100 Years project, which charts the progress of women in law, Murphy discusses everything from her motivation for becoming a lawyer to her love of deals and the reality of life as a City lawyer.

As one of the most high profile female M&A partners of her generation, she also talks about the need to improve the number of women staying in law, asking: "How do you fix the system and make it work better for men and women who all want to have a real life, as well as a professional life?"

During her time at Slaughters, which including six years as head of corporate, she worked with clients including General Electric, Santander, Alliance Boots and Burberry.

Major deals she was involved in include the demutualisation of Abbey National in 1989, Alliance Boots' £9.7bn takeover by KKR in 2007, Manchester Airport Group's £1.5bn acquisition of Stansted Airport in 2013, and Santander's £2bn acquisition of 318 branches from RBS in 2010.
