UK top 50 firm Bond Dickinson has struck an exclusive strategic alliance with US firm Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice.
Womble Carlyle is a North Carolina-headquartered law firm which, according to data from Legal Week's sister title The American Lawyer (AmLaw), had revenue of $296.5m (£209m) in 2015, making it the 111th largest firm in the US by revenue.
In 2015 Womble Carlyle had 494 lawyers, making it the 88th largest firm in the US by lawyer numbers.
It has 15 offices across the US and is particularly strong in the south eastern and mid-Atlantic states.
Bond Dickinson was formed through the 2013 merger between Bristol-headquartered Bond Pearce and Newcastle-headquartered Dickinson Dees.
The firm had revenue of £107m in 2014-15, making it the 36th largest firm in the UK by revenue.
Bond Dickinson managing partner, Jonathan Blair (pictured), described the deal as "a challenger model to the way that business is transacted across the Atlantic".
Speaking to Legal Week Blair said the two firms had worked together for seven years, but over the last 12-18 months had started talking about how they could work together more closely.
He added: "I want to be clear that it isn't a merger and putting in place something that leads to a merger is not the objective, the objective is to service the clients in the US and UK. We will be targeting specific client opportunities together on the basis of this unique alliance we have in place."
Betty Temple (pictured), the chair and CEO of Womble Carlyle, said: "The alliance will increase the already established synergies between our two firms and serve as a catalyst to grow our global skillset and opportunities."
Womble Carlyle had profit per partner of $650,000 (£457,890) and revenue per lawyer of $600,000 (£422,670) in 2015.
In 2014-15 Bond Dickinson posted average profit per equity partner (PEP) of £284,000 and revenue per lawyer of £226,200. The firm had 141 partners in 2014-15, of whom 67 were equity partners.
The UK firm has offices in Aberdeen, Bristol, Leeds, London, Newcastle, Plymouth and Southampton.
Womble Carlyle has five offices in North Carolina, located in Greensboro, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Durham and Charlotte, three offices in South Carolina, located in Charleston, Columbia and Greenville and two offices in Virginia in Charlottesville and Tysons Corner.
The firm also has offices in Palo Alto, California; Wilmington, Delaware; Washington DC; Atlanta, Georgia and Baltimore, Maryland.
In 2014 the firm made its first step into the German market with an alliance with German firm Redeker Sellner Dahs.
