A team from Baker & McKenzie Habib Al Mulla, led by chairman Habib Al Mulla, is advising the UAE's Federal Transport Authority (FTA) on reviewing and reforming the country's maritime law, which has not been updated for more than 30 years.
The firm has been campaigning for reform in the maritime industry and, in November 2015, the maritime team met with Dubai court judges and officials to put forward suggestions designed to help Dubai consolidate its position as a leading regional and international maritime hub.
Following the instruction, a team of maritime lawyers from the UAE, Egypt, Singapore, Australia and the UK is working with the FTA, other relevant UAE government authorities and regulators, and industry and academic experts on the project.
The team is also consulting with more than 500 industry participants. The brief is to bring the Maritime Law and its associated rules and regulations in line with global standards.
The judges praised Bakers for being "a trusted adviser in the development of laws and regulations in multiple jurisdictions".
