Clyde & Co has opened its first office in Germany with the hire of a team from German firm Noerr, while Dentons has launched an office in Rome.

The five-lawyer team joins the firm in Duesseldorf and will focus on the insurance sector.

The team is led by two partners, Tanja Schramm and Henning Schaloske, who focus on insurance litigation for German and international insurers and reinsurers.

Simon Konsta, Clyde & Co's head of insurance, said: "Having an office in Duesseldorf, in Germany's industrial heartland and the home of many domestic and international insurers, will enable us to better support our international clients, form deeper ties with our German clients and increase our share of outbound work from Germany."

For us to do so, we need to be confident that not only will it benefit our clients but also that we can hire the best lawyers in our chosen sectors. Without doubt that is what Henning, Tanja and the team represent in Germany."

The office is Clydes' 15th in Europe, with existing bases in the UK, Spain, France and Greece – and it is the firm's 46th office worldwide.

In May, the firm announced that it was launching in Miami with the bolt-on of Thornton Davis Fein, an insurance litigation boutique.

Clydes' revenue for the 2015-16 financial year was £447.3m, up 13.2% from the year before, while its profit per equity partner rose 1% to a new high of £665,000.

Meanwhile, Dentons has opened an office in Rome. The office will be the international firm's second office in Italy, after Milan.

Current Milan office managing partner Federico Sutti will also head up the new Rome office as Dentons' Italy managing partner.

Sutti joined Dentons from DLA Piper in October last year to spearhead Dentons' growth in the country. He said: "When we entered the Italian market last October, we had a clear vision to build Dentons into a full-service firm within two years and one of the top international law firms in Italy within three years.

"Opening an office in the capital city of Rome is one of the cornerstones of that strategy."

The initial team in Rome will include antitrust partner Michele Carpagnano and corporate partner Luca Pocobelli, along with a team of associates, who will relocate from the firm's Milan office.

In addition, several Milan-based partners, including Stefano Speroni, Matteo Falcione and Sutti will split their time between the two offices.

The Italian legal market has seen various moves during the past year.

After five of DLA Piper's lawyers quit to launch Dentons' Milan office in October 2015, the firm rebuilt with the hire of nine lawyers from Ashurst in Italy.

The Ashurst team, spread across Rome and Milan, included three partners and six other lawyers.

Ashurst managing partner Domenico Gullo subsequently moved to DLA Piper to reunite with his former colleagues.

Last month, Ashurst closed its Rome office following those departures.
